Strawberry Oat Smoothie
This is my go-to smoothie recipe! Not only do I enjoy it, but my kids love it as well! It is 100% kid-friendly. This Strawberry Oat Smoothie is made with healthy ingredients and will keep you full for a while. It will also definitely satisfy your sweet tooth! If you need a quick breakfast that will get you going in the morning, this smoothie is perfect. It takes less than 5 minutes to prepare and it’s super easy to take along with you in a travel cup.
The great thing about this Strawberry Oat Smoothie is that it is super versatile, so you can really change things up to your personal liking. If you prefer non-dairy, you can switch out the whole milk for plant-based milk, such as almond milk or oat milk. You can also use your favourite sweetener rather than honey. The possibilities are endless and there’s a smoothie for everyone!
Ingredients Needed
- Oats: rolled oats is the best to use in smoothies, but quick oats work well too. I wouldn’t use steel cut oats as they are a bit harder and won’t grind well enough for a smooth and creamy smoothie. Oats add many health benefits to the smoothie and makes it more filling.
- Frozen strawberries: if you want a thick, cold smoothie, I would 100% recommend using frozen strawberries, which is why it’s written in this recipe. Fresh strawberries can also be used but the consistency wouldn’t be as thick. You can also freeze your own strawberries and use it in the recipe.
- Plain Yogurt: adds a creaminess and slight tanginess to the smoothie. You can add flavoured yogurt if that’s what you have on hand.
- Whole milk: adds more creaminess and nutrients.
- Honey: adds sweetness to the smoothie. If your strawberries are really sweet, you can omit this ingredient.
- Vanilla extract: adds an extra little vanilla flavour, you can’t go wrong with that!
How to Make Strawberry Oat Smoothie
This berry smoothie recipe is quick and easy, taking less than 5 minutes to prepare and requires the simplest of ingredients. Follow these simple instructions for a delicious strawberry smoothie.
Pulse oats in a blender first until fine. I like to do this step first to ensure all of the oats are blended finely. If you try to blend everything together, you may not get a completely smooth smoothie, and may get some oat pieces.
To the oats, add the frozen strawberries, yogurt, milk, honey, and vanilla and blend for 45-60 minutes, until everything is smooth. If your blender isn’t a strong one, you might need a little more time. I’ve had this Ninja Blender for years and it’s still going strong — it works amazingly.
Serve immediately. Enjoy!
Substitutions and Additions
You can absolutely substitute ingredients that you love more than what’s listed in this recipe. That’s what’s so great about this versatile recipe. Here are a few ideas:
- Instead of adding all strawberries, you can add half strawberries, half blueberries. Or, you can come up with your own fruit combinations. Other possibilities include mango, banana, pineapple, and peach. Just be sure to use frozen fruit. You can use what’s in season
- To replace plain yogurt, you can use Greek yogurt, which will make the smoothie creamier and thicker. If you want a vegan smoothie, there are many vegan yogurt options out there.
- Whole cow’s milk is usually my go-to for smoothies, but feel free to use your personal favourite. You can use nut milks or oat milk. I find that whole cow’s milk really makes a fuller, creamier smoothie, which I love! But I’ve made smoothies using almond milk, as well, and it was still delicious.
- For the sweetener, use whichever you prefer. I use honey because I like the taste. You can use maple syrup, agave nectar, sweetened condensed milk, or anything else you like. If your fruits are already sweet enough, you can omit it altogether.
- If you want this smoothie to pack a protein punch, try adding a scoop of protein powder to your smoothie and blending until smoothie. If the protein powder you use is sweetened, you can reduce the amount of sweetener in the recipe.
- You can slightly adjust the amount of milk that you use in the recipe, depending on how thin or thick you like your smoothies.
- Instead of using sweeteners, try add in a half or whole banana, which naturally is very sweet.
Frequently Asked Questions
I wouldn’t recommend it. You want the frozen strawberries to keep their thickness after being blended. If you serve this smoothie later, the smoothie will have a much thinner consistency. If that’s okay with you though, then feel free to make ahead of time!
You can use a vegan yogurt option to replace the plain yogurt and use plant-based milk to replace the whole milk. Instead of honey, vegan sweetened condensed milk, agave, or maple syrup (or just skip the sweetener altogether if your fruit is already sweet).
The oats add flavour, thickness, nutrients, and makes the smoothie more filling. But, you can omit it altogether if you prefer it without.
This depends on your preference. Frozen fruit will make your smoothie thicker and colder, without needing ice. Fresh fruit will result in a thinner consistency and it won’t be as cold. You can use ice to thicken it up and make it colder. You can also use a combination of frozen and fresh fruit.
You can use any other sweetener that you like, it doesn’t have to be honey. Or, you can skip the sweetener altogether. If your fruits are already sweet, there might not be a need to use a sweetener.
